Hi band!

It's less than two weeks till school reopens. Cherish the time now to practice what you are weak in, figure out the fingerings, rhythm, articulations and dynamics! Don't just wait for your seniors or Mr Wong to figure out them for you. When school reopens, there will be very less time for you to practice for concert. Don't waste the time you have now before holiday ends. Also, don't forget to do your holiday assignments! :)

Hello band!

here are some rules which band NEED to take note of:

- when need to bring home instrument, MUST inform the QM who is in charge of the sign-in-sign-out book for the section.

- do not change instruments without informing vanessa or ben.

- no sharing or touching of others' instruments.

- the best time to send the instrument for repair is during band breaks or exam periods. please take good care of your instruments. anyone whose instrument keep spoiling are to pay the repair cost by themselves.

- problems with instruments immediately report.

Band Investiture on 15th July would not be successful without the contributions & hard work by the band members, the helps of the teachers and Mr D.Wong and the plannings of the committee. The band did a great job playing Memories of Friendship & Go The Distance. Not forgetting the sec1s, sec2s and sec3s performances, you guys did a good job too! Keep it up and do a better job for the upcoming NDP celebrations! Remember to memorize the scores okay!

Take note, here are the new dressing rules for the band:
1. All girls must pin UP all their fringes. Girls whose hair is touching the eyebrows need to pin up their hair.
2. Guys with long hair, fringes, side burns or hair that is touching the back of your collar will be given 2 choices: Warning will be given to get either get your hair cut by next practice or use a hairband OR if your hair gets out of hand (too long), hairband is not allowed and you will be send to the DM.

The IC will then pass the leftover tickets and the collected money to Secretary Heads during the next practice. Booth will be in the canteen beside Red Cross room.

For the IC(in red) of the 1st shift after school, go collect the tcikets from Ms Chen and let the next shift continue with the leftovers. The IC for the last shift will then pass the leftover tickets and the collected money to Secretary Heads during the next practice. Booth will be at foyer.

When selling tickets, please wave the tickets at the student and ask if the want to buy.

**You can actually leave your recorder with your files or dismantle them and put it inside your case if there is space so that you will not forget them.

These are the rules being set up for every band practices

Basic Discipline

For every single band practice, all band members are expected to

Report on time.

Inform Majors/Teacher IC/Recruits' Head/SL/ASL before hand if you are
- not coming
- coming later or
- leaving early
and give reasons.

Only valid reasons will be accepted. If you are sick, we will only accept MCs. Parents' letter will only be accepted under special circumstances.

Eg.

Valid reasons
• School's extra lesson.
• Workshops.
• Any other school activities.

Invalid reasons
• Tuition
• Meet up with friends to do project
• Need to study for tests/exams
• A lot of homework.

During Fall-in

All pockets must be empty.
No watches.
Seniors are to stand at the front.
-SLs are to stand in the 1st row. In cases when SLs are absent, ASLs or the seniors are to
fill up the gap.
No talking or any form of communication.
No fidgeting.
Respond to questions/instructions given loud, clear and firm.
-addressing the person either as sir or ma'am

During Combines

Everyone to have writing materials(pencil & eraser) with them. Take down notes or reminders on the scores/foolscap papers.
Respond to every question asked by Mr Wong with a 'Yes' loud, clear and firm.
Have a good sitting posture.
-everyone is to sit half chair and don't slouch
If in doubt, ask and your doubts will be enlightened :D

Band 151... Unity Secondary School...SILVER!
Good job band! I'm sure all of you are happy with the results we've got? Our hard work did paid off? All thanks to Mr Wong, the teachers, alumni and of course, all of you.

Many of you had sacrificed a lot of time for band and neglected your studies. This silver has proved that it's worth your sacrificing and neglecting.

Band, I'm really proud of you. Without each and every one of you, we would not have gotten silver. Everyone had played your part in playing. You guys persisted on and came for the practices although you're tired after a long day in school. I think some of you had even gotten scolded by your parents for the long hours in band. But as you know, this is a family and with one person absent, the band could not balance.

Although there is attendance problem, I really hope to see full attendance from now on. The sec 4s and 5s are stepping down and the band should get more independent not just in terms of playing.

This is just the beginning. Your aim now is to get a GOLD in two years time when the current sec 2s are the most senior in the band. If you think two years is long, it's actually not. So, if you guys want to get better results, start working extremely hard from now. Train the sec 1s.

All the seniors, including the alumni, will always have faith in you. You guys must carry on to play well, improve and prove that you're good. The seniors will always be there for you no matter what happens! Ok?

Lastly, please remember: ONE BAND ONE SOUND.

Continue to move on and do not give up.

Note: The celebration will be on Saturday, 11 April, 11 am. We will be having lunch together in the school canteen. So pass the message around.

Hey Band!
Tomorrow is the BIG DAY! You've all done a great job by having full attendance and giving Mr Wong your attention today. Well done! I hope to see the same thing tomorrow. As said by Ivy, we've only got one chance and all of you know that the chance is very important to determine many things.

So what if we're the last band? Remember what Mrs Ong had told you guys. We got to aim high. There's still many out-of-tune stuff and many things being forgotten.

So please, please, please! Remember what Mr Wong had said. Remember to look at him when you're on stage and not elsewhere. Remember to stay calm so that you can take in full breath and produce a full and in-tune sound. Remember your posture; especially the first row. Remember to feel the beat. Please do not rush. Listen to each other. Do the necessary. Sleep early so that you can give Mr Wong your 100% tomorrow.

As all of you know, we are only left with 1practice. And we expect the last practice to be a full attendance practice because it will be better if all of us solve problems together rather than solving problems with some people around and some not around.

So if you are having any extra lessons, NAPFA test and oral, please skip them or postpone it to other days. We hope to see no late comers and full attendance!

Remember to apply every single little stuffs that Mr Wong had pointed out to all of you during practice, you can highlight, colour, draw, paint or whatsoever on your score. It's your score and it's not just for reading notes, please do whatever you can to make sure that you remember what you are supposed to do on every single bar!

We are good in remembering stuffs on the day during the practice, but on the next practice, all of you will tend to forget everything! So please please please, do something. We don't want to screw up on Wednesday, right?

Let's just work extremely hard for SYF. We practiced so much for the past few months, we cannot just let our hard work go down the drain, right?!! Remember to LOOK AT Mr Wong, DO NOT look down on your score just because you are nervous during the SYF day.

We can have many rehearsals, but we only have one chance to perform on SYF. One chance, is all we have. Please grab hold of the opportunity. We can do this, we have to think positively, we have to believe we can do this together, as a band!

Let's give our best shot on 08 April, we only have one chance, one chance to prove to the school and everybody else that all the hard work and efforts we have contributed for the past few months is worth it.

Syf is just 3 days away. There's really not much time left.
All of you want to achieve a good result and not a bronze again.

We're capable of it and it's your choice whether or not
you want to play your music well.
Just listen more to each other and be as in tune as possible.

during the two combines that we're left with.
It's simply just a matter of discipline. Please put in more effort,

We are only left with 28 days, 8 combines, 8 sectionals and 4 tutorials to SYF. As all of you know, we're running out of time. So let's just practise a little harder and get good results for SYF 2009. I'm sure nobody wants to get a COP award, right?

And I hope that the Sec 3s that are falling-in and out the band will take it seriously, the band's discipline is getting worst. Same goes for the time when you guys are doing the warm-ups without the seniors.

Please try to listen to each other and do more singing exercise during your sectionals as this method really work. Please, please memorize your scores as well.

I seriously hope that you guys will take SYF seriously because from what I see, you guys don't really take this competition a serious one. Just think, if you guys got a COP for this SYF, you will be laughed by your schoolmates and classmates. The whole school will be looking down on us and the school will stop supporting us, there will also be no more overseas trip. Is that what you guys really want? If no, then please work harder and do your sectionals properly.

Hello.

The next practice will be tomorrow (30/10), fall-in at o300 PM, not 0400 PM!
Okay, I guess that I don't have to come here every time just to tell you guys when is the next practice as all of you should have the holiday schedule that Mrs Ong has distributed to us.

I'm here to tell you guys to remember to bring your straws for tomorrow's practice, or rather, every practice as we'll need it for our warm-up for air focusing. For those who have not paid for the Hong Kong trip, please do so by either today or tomorrow by 1100 AM in the General Office.

We'll also need your blood group, so please go and check and tell us tomorrow. If you do not know what is your blood group, go to the polyclinic to have a blood test and give us your blood type by next Tuesday.

Well, we know that our exams are long over and it is the holidays now but we cannot take the practices we are having lightly as we are only left with around 4 to 5 months to SYF 2009. We do not have much time left so it's time to commit yourself to the SYF and the band.

The SYF date will be 30 March to 4 April and 6 April to 9 April. The venue will be at Singapore Conference Hall(the same venue we had in SYF 2007).

The Seniors(Sec3s) might not be able to attend practices next year after the Chinese New Year as we will be having our exams in March and we might not be able to go for SYF 2009 too(not confirmed). So please start practicing hard on your instruments and let's all work hard to get a Gold medal on next year's SYF!

The next band practice will be on the coming Tuesday(28/10), practice will be from 0400PM - 0700PM. Fall-in at 0400PM in the hall, not outside the music room.

Please bring along a straw that Mr Wong had asked us to bring(Yakult straws recommended) and the amount of money that you are suppose to pay for the Hong Kong trip. Those that have a huge amount to pay and are in cash, please be careful with your money! Don't lose it.

Hey band.

Finally, I'm going to reveal the designs of the band hoodie.
Sorry for the delays. We were not ready yet. But now, we are! :D

JENG JENG JENG!!

This is for the front of the hoodie.

This design will be printed on the top left of the hoodie.

The part where I wrote "section" is where your section's name will be.
For example, your section is Clarinet.

Then, the word "Clarinet" will be printed on your hoodie.

For the colours, most likely the prints, as in the designs, will be in only one colour.

I'll check with the printer again.

Cause if you want more colours, the costlier the hoodie will be.

Maybe not more than three colours.

Again, I'll check with the printer and inform you all by next practice.

For the back of the hoodie, there are three designs for you to choose.

Voting will be done next practice, which is Thursday.

Design 1

I've shown this design to the printer and he said that because this design has fine drawings (those light small notes) probably those small notes may not be able to be seen when printed.

Design 2

Personally, I prefer this one.

Cause it's simple, cute and funny.

Hahas. :D

I think it will look great if this design is repeated on the whole hoodie.

As in, the whole hoodie is covered with this monkey.

Hahaha.
I'll check with the printer whether this is possible. (:

Design 3

I think this design will only look nice if it's in colour.

Cause, our hoodie must not have more than three colours.

So, this design will not look nice if we were to use only three colours.

Please choose wisely.

Look at the designs carefully and decide by next practice.

(I prefer the monkey!)

Only those going Hong Kong will need to buy the hoodie.
But you can still buy the hoodie even though you're not going HK if you want.

Oh ya!

The hoodie will be in white.

No dark colours cause we'll look dull.

For the designs' colour, you choose.

The last time I checked, the hoodie looks like this.

There will be a zip on the front.

This is just an example.

The material is the normal type of hoodies' material.

Cotton, I think.

I'll try to find a better quality.

Most probably I'll bring in samples the next practice and take your sizes.

The National Band Competition is this SUNDAY!
Please CONCENTRATE and pay ATTENTION to what Mr Wong says and come for EVERY practice (They are very IMPORTANT...)

Last Saturday's performance for Unity in Rhapsody was OK... It could be better...Anyway, it's already a great job done. So, keep it up. I hope we don't screw up for this Sunday's competition.

There will be Band Practice on Thursday (29th May).
Fall at 2pm sharp.

The attendance for the Sec 1s are not very good for the past few practices so can the seniors please call up the juniors and ask them to come for practice oftenly?

Our performance and competition is coming soon but yet some of the people who are performing are always skipping Band Practices. I hope that those performing will come for Band Practice as we are only left with several practices before our performance comes which is the 5th of July.

Anyway, the Band Camp is gonna be from 09 June '08 - 11 June '08.
We will be falling in at 9am sharp, please try not to be late as it will mess up the camp schedule.
